Fragrance Oils vs. Essential Oils: What’s the Difference?
Many people wonder, "Are essential oils and fragrance oils the same?" and "Are fragrance oils safe?" The simple answer is no, they aren't the same, though the best fragrance oils often include essential oils and yes, they are completely safe.
While fragrance oils sometimes get a bad reputation for not being "natural," high-quality ones are thoroughly tested and scientifically approved for safety in candles and topical products like soaps and lotions. In some cases, fragrance oils are even safer in candles than essential oils!
Understanding Fragrance Oils
Fragrance oils are synthetic oils created for their scent and are used in candles and body products. Their safety is regulated by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) and the International Fragrance Association (IFRA). Each ingredient is tested by the RIFM, with findings published in peer-reviewed journals. The IFRA then publishes usage guidelines based on this data, ensuring the oils' safety for various applications.
What About Essential Oils?
Essential oils have been used for thousands of years to enhance physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. They are used in diffusers, as topical applications, and in candles. However, finding a candle made exclusively with essential oils is challenging. These oils are natural but should be used with care as they are potent chemical compounds.
For instance, creating essential oils is resource-intensive. It takes around 50lb of eucalyptus to make 1lb of eucalyptus oil, and an astonishing 10,000lb of roses to produce just 1lb of rose oil. This high demand on resources makes pure essential oil candles expensive and not very sustainable.
Why Not Just Use Essential Oils in Candles?
Cost: Pure essential oil candles are prohibitively expensive. A tiny 5ml jar of rose essential oil can cost £200-£250, making the cost of a full candle impractical.
Heat Sensitivity: Essential oils don't always react well to the heat of a burning candle. They may smell good when the candle is cold, but the scent can disappear when lit. Additionally, their low flashpoint can make them a fire hazard in high concentrations.
Sustainability: Using vast amounts of plant material for essential oils is not eco-friendly. A fragrance oil infused with essential oils is a more sustainable choice.
The Bottom Line
Essential oils are wonderful but not cost-effective or sustainable for candles. Fragrance oils approved by scientific bodies like the RIFM and IFRA offer a budget-friendly, eco-friendly alternative.
